Why do a MInfTech?

The MInfTech suite of programs is designed for students with a background in a discipline other than Information Technology, who desire to acquire skills in this rapidly advancing field.  The programs aim to prepare graduates for the challenges and opportunities of the future by providing an excellent foundation in IT applications, development, skills and knowledge.

Students with a background in IT may be more suited to seek enrolment in the Master of Science (Computer Science) and related programs. Students without an IT background may be interested in the Master of Information Technology (Management).

Information & Communications Technology underpins much of human endeavour in today's world.  The technology permeates much of our work and non-work lives, bringing not only economic benefits, but enhancing the quality of life.  Industry increasingly wants people who have a combination of business, problem-solving and interpersonal skills.  Returning to study can not only bring you up to speed with the latest developments, but can  help you obtain the skills mix employers want and open your eyes to new ways of looking at things.

The 'tech wreck' or 'dot com crash' at the start of this decade saw a worldwide decrease in job opportunities in the mainstream ICT industry, although demand for competent software designers and managers remained strong.  The recovery has been at a more-sustainable level and the local industry is growing well.  Industry leaders and government are now concerned that there will be a shortage of qualified people in the next few years, and salaries are on the rise. Facts and figures on job prospects for IT graduates in general are here.

Why do my MInfTech at UQ?

Here are 8 reasons to choose UQ for your postgraduate IT studies.

What can I study in the MInfTech?

The program has a strong focus on information systems and database technology.  These systems run organisations of all kinds and account for about half the ICT industry in Australia. Those intending to use a MInfTech to leverage pre-existing skill will use information systems and database technology in their own industry.

Central to the program is the group project.  The two courses comprising the project take an industrial-scale system from initial specification through design, implementation and documentation.

Introductory courses cover software engineering and information systems, together with discrete mathematics (logic, set theory, and other mathematics essential to computing), and basic operating systems and networking (how a computer works and how networks are created).

Core technology courses include those on databases and interoperability (including web information systems).  Human-computer interaction courses offer valuable front-end skills, while students can choose to develop their programming skills and networking skills (including information security).

A wide range of electives offered by other UQ Schools can be included in the program, helping students to develop an understanding of how ICT is applied, and to develop new ways of thinking.

There is also an opportunity to obtain credit for industry certification courses.

Where do the studies lead to?

Graduates combine their core IT skills in programming, software design, database technology, human-computer interaction, networking and practical project management with those of their original discipline in a professional, applications-oriented setting.  Elective courses allow specialist expertise to be obtained  in electronic commerce, technology management, health informatics and business and geographical information systems.

You can view the attributes our graduates can expect to acquire here.

Jobs are available in:

  • the design of the interface between humans and IT applications (eg hypertext/multimedia, web pages, computer assisted learning packages, virtual reality and electronic commerce)
  • the organisational side of information systems (data modeller, computer-supported cooperative work analyst, technical planner, systems acceptance)
  • many modern industries that embrace all aspects of computer usage and design, such as banking, telecommunications, defence, commerce, government, health, education, bioinformatics.

From 2008, the MInfTech is accredited at the professional level with the Australian Computer Society.

If you are attracted to curiosity-driven research, a postgraduate degree by research offers an opportunity to contribute to community knowledge or even innovate a new solution.

Who is eligible?

Students may enrol in a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma and upgrade to the Masters with full credit.  Or, they can enrol in the Masters, but graduate with a Certificate or Diploma, based on partial completion.  Admission requires a bachelor degree from a recognised university, in any discipline, with excellent results.

  • Graduate Certificate in Information Technology (1 semester full time or 2 semesters part time).  Information on entry requirements and program structure is available here.
  • Graduate Diploma in Information Technology (2 semesters full time or 4 semesters part time).  Information on entry requirements and program structure is available here.
  • Master of Information Technology (3 semesters full time, 6 semesters part time).  Information on entry requirements and program structure is available here.
  • Master of Information Technology (Management) (4 semesters full time, 8 semesters part time). Information on entry requirements and program structure is available here.
