Recommended Electives

Below is a list of electives recommended for those studying within the Multimedia program. This list is a guide only, recommended by staff & by previous students in the program as being relevant to Multimedia Design. Be sure to check the pre-requisites for each course, as you may have to plan your electives to lead in to a particular course. For example, INFS2244 requires INFS2233 so you would need to plan to complete the pre-requisite before enrolling in INFS2244.

MSTU1000 Introduction to Media Studies

A popular feature of this course is the series of presentations by
practitioners from diverse media industries. The course introduces
various ways of thinking about media issues such as media ownership,
control and regulation; and audiences.

This course is a prerequisite for advanced media studies if you are interested in this area, this course is a must.

  MSTU1001 Introduction to Film & TV Studies

An introduction to the analysis of film and television texts which provides students with an understanding of the technical and industrial conditions within which these texts are produced, as well as of their generic features.

MSTU2000 Music Subcultures and the Media

A study of music fan cultures past and present
drawing on various theories of subcultures and examining how they interact with new media and the music industry at large.

 

WRIT1005 Fundamentals of Writing

*Strongly Recommended*

For Asian ESL students, suggest WRIT1001 English writing for Asian language speakers (available all semesters)

This course is the introductory course for the Writing Major and will ground you in the fundamentals of writing. It will teach writing at word level; syntax and grammar; effective punctuation; paragraphing and document frameworks; revising, editing, and proofreading; and effective document design and presentation.
MSTU1002 Changing Channels: Developments in mass media Introduces students to main theoretical frameworks
utilised in media studies; particular emphasis on genre theory. Students explore developments of mass media (print, film, TV & radio) through the examination of one popular icon - Tarzan.
  MUSC1060 Introduction to Music Techniques Available to non-BMus students only. Preparatory study of techniques of Western music, through integrated writing, analysis & aural application.
WRIT1002 Critical Thinking & Academic Writing This course develops skills in critical thinking & academic writing that are essential to the research & presentation of academic assignments. A core course WRIT1002 is the foundation for later study.   COMU1000 Introduction to Communication & Cultural Studies

Introduction to analysis of language & signs in everyday culture. Texts from spoken, written, visual & electronic media, their functions & the ways in which they produce meaning.

INFS3202 Web Information Systems This course teaches the concepts and skills for building sophisticated database-driven Web Information Systems (WIS). It provides a comprehensive and systematic introduction to the latest WIS technologies. It has a focus on the latest technologies for WIS development. It covers concepts & fundamentals of WIS, client- and server-side technologies, Web application development, XML, AJAX, Web-based security, search and service.  

INFS2244 E-Commerce systems Development

Approaches to analysing, designing and developing information systems to support online business. Developing web based applications to support online business.

INFS2233 Foundations of Electronic Commerce This course introduces students to managerial, technical, social, and regulatory aspects of modern e-Commerce and provides students with experience in the development and publication of websites.   MUSC1010 Introduction to Music Technology

MKTG1501 Introduction to Marketing

Has been designed to provide you with an introduction to the field of marketing. The course focuses on the role of marketing and its importance in contemporary organisations and society. During the semester we will critically explore marketing principles, concepts and models from a practical perspective. You will have the opportunity to apply this theory through the analysis of a variety of real-world examples directed at amplifying your understanding of how marketing concepts are used.

 

MGTS1301 Introduction to Management

Has been designed to acquaint you with the principles of managing business organisations. Throughout the semester we will critically explore management principles, concepts, models and challenges from both a national and an international perspective. You will apply theory through analysis of real-world examples provided in the text, lecture and video materials. By the end of the course, you should have a good overview of the management discipline.
