What is Engineering?
Engineering involves the application of science and technology to create useful products and services for the community, within economic, environmental and resource constraints.
Why Engineering?
From the design of an 'intelligent home' to the development of complex information systems, engineers are integral to the shaping of tomorrow's world. If you enjoy developing creative and practical solutions to modern problems then you will find engineering offers you plenty of opportunities. This is an exciting era for engineering. Advances in biological and chemical sciences and information technology have created new engineering opportunities. Engineers are now involved in areas such as biomedical/tissue/genetic engineering, nano-technology, nano-materials and software engineering.
The 21st century is an era of great global and local challenges, such as climate change, clean energy, infrastructure for booming populations, and the communications revolution. Challenges like these create tremendous opportunities for engineers, who will be part of solutions at scales from the molecular to the global.

Direct entry for best Aerospace Gateway Schools students
Top-performing students from Queensland's aerospace gateway high schools can gain direct admission to the UQ Bachelor of Engineering degree program. The schools concerned nominate students during Term 3 of Year 12, and a selection committee of UQ and Education Queensland representatives will choose successful candidates. The application form is here.
The schools are: Aviation High, Balmoral SHS, Bremer SHS, Brisbane SHS, Cairns SHS, Caloundra SHS, Good Shepherd Catholic College, Indooroopilly SHS, Iona College, Ipswich Grammar School, Miami SHS, Oakey SHS, Redbank Plains SHS, Springwood SHS, St Patrick's College, Toowoomba SHS and Townsville SHS.
What will I study?
The Bachelor of Engineering program offers 16 specialised fields of study (called majors or double majors) and a number of minors that can be added to some of these core fields of study to broaden your area of speciality.
The School of ITEE has a general philosophy which underpins the structure of each of the majors/double majors it delivers:
- Aerospace Engineering
- Computer Systems Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Electrical and Biomedical Engineering (also available as a combined Bachelors/Masters degree program)
- Mechatronic Engineering
- Software Engineering
A key feature of the above programs is that students complete team projects in second and third years and an individual project in fourth year. Employers strongly support this approach to learning.

You can also take the four-year Bachelor of Engineering as a dual degree over five to five-and-a-half years by combining it with the following:
