Failure to follow these guidelines may result in delays to your graduation in the BE. Read the information carefully and consult an academic advisor if you have any questions.
This section
aims to give some advice in the selection of Free Electives in the Computer
Systems, Electrical ,
Mechatronics and Software Engineering programs.
(Copied here
from BE List rules
for your convenience)
Students must obtain written approval in advance from their academic adviser for all electives chosen from outside the BE List. You do not need approval for courses on the BE List, including courses from other BE plans.
You will need to gain approval before the appropriate cutoff dates for addition and cancellation of courses. Failure to obtain approval to do a course as a free elective before week two of the semester in which the course is taken may result in non-approval of the course towards the BE. It is up to the student to seek the approval prior to taking the course.
There is no guarantee that courses done without prior approval will count towards the BE. This may affect your semester of graduation.
Students have to complete a request to choose any of their free electives, and there is a section on the free electives form where they must explain in 20 words how this choice of subjects will enhance their studies in the engineering profession.
Students may enroll in a number of free electives depending upon the plan or program (e.g., dual degree), and students must ensure that the number of units of free electives is within the range permitted by their degree program and any previous credit for free electives.
Students are encouraged to choose their electives from the BE list, and should include no more than #8 of level 1 courses.
Any changes from the rules and these guidelines needs a recommendation from an academic advisor AND approval from EPSA faculty.
Hand the free electives form into the ITEE School Office in the General Purpose South building.
The following courses will not be approved because:
the content of the subject has considerable overlap with material covered in the schedules, or
the course is an introduction to a technical topic for a non-engineering or non-ITEE engineering person, or
course
is totally unrelated to the professional development of an engineer.

| ECON1050 | Introductory Mathematical Economics - too much overlap with compulsory MATH courses |
| ELEC2002 | Electronics and Microprocessors - incompatible with ELEC1000 and CSSE1000. |
| HMST???? | None of these courses in Human Movements will be approved as they do not enhance the engineering degree in a professional manner. |
| Non-English Language Courses | Students are subject the relevant program rules in the BA. That is, native speakers and high school trained speakers are not permitted to undertake early year courses. Courses chosen must relate to the professional conduct of engineering. A single non-english language course is unlikely to be approved - a stream of courses should be taken to ensure proficiency in the language. |
| MATH1040 | This is a prerequisite for entry to the BE degree (Equivalent to High School Maths B) so credit is not available for this course. |

MUSC1000 MUSC1700 MUSC1710 |
Not of relevance in the BE. |
