 Computer Systems Engineering

What will I study?

Computer systems engineers design and manage computer-based systems, for both embedded systems and more conventional computers such as personal computers (PCs) and personal digital assistants (PDAs).  Computer systems engineers have the additional skills to produce the software that runs the hardware, and to integrate computer products into larger systems. They are involved in the design, construction and programming of equipment used in the telecommunications industry such as processing of voice signals, satellite communication signals and geophysical data.  Students develop electrical engineering and information technology knowledge, in conjunction with professional skills.  They complete team projects in second and third year and an individual project in fourth year.  Employers strongly support this team project approach to learning.

Where will I work?

Computer systems engineers are qualified to work within the mainstream computer industry but also in most other areas of electrical engineering. Career opportunities exist with a range of employers, including multinational computer companies; State and federal government departments; small consulting companies; the telecommunications industry; manufacturing and resource industries; and specialist consulting companies. Graduates are employed as designers of computer interfaces, or of micro-processors. They also work as programmers; designing and implementing applications ranging from real-time operating systems for embedded microcontrollers, to the software used in information terminals.

What can I combine with my major?

You may include a minor in Biomedical or Telecommunications engineering.  You can also do a double major in Computer Systems engineering.
