Program Overview
The undergraduate program integrates science, engineering, and mathematics training to prepare students for a broad range of careers in engineering, science, health care, and business. The program focuses on developing the skills necessary to address a wide range of problems, at the interface of engineering and medicine, with a strong emphasis on innovation.
The undergraduate program begins with a broad foundation of preparatory courses in engineering, mathematics, biology and physics. This is followed by more advanced coursework and laboratory training, combining engineering analysis and design techniques with biology and physiology of cells and organisms, from the molecular level to complex systems. An undergraduate program in Biomedical Engineering can either be undertaken as a double major with Electrical Engineering and as a minor with Computer Systems Engineering or Mechatronic Engineering. The core engineering courses cover topics such as electronics, digital systems, circuits, signals and systems, software engineering, and communications. Throughout the program there are multiple opportunities to choose elective courses in addition to the core courses required to fulfil either the Electrical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering or Computer Systems Engineering major.
In the second and third years, team projects explore group, design-oriented laboratory experiences. The compulsory biomedical electives include Biomedical Instrumentation and Image Formation in third year and Medical Imaging in fourth year. The fourth, and final, year involves further coursework and a full-year project to develop individual design and research skills. Advanced electives in the final years of the program provide opportunities to specialise in instrumentation or signal and image processing.
Program Curriculum
The undergraduate program can be undertaken as a double major with Electrical Engineering or a minor with Computer Systems Engineering or Mechatronic Engineering as part of a 4-year Bachelor of Engineering degree. Please refer to the BE list for further information on the Electrical/Mechatronic/Computer System Engineering plan rules.
