 Bachelor of Arts (BA)

ICT in the BA

Bachelor of Arts students can choose from more than 40 majors (areas of study) depending on their career aspirations. The flexibility of an Arts degree allows students to combine majors as diverse as Information Technology and languages – there are many combinations.

Studying an Information Technology major in the Bachelor of Arts allows you to combine this area with studies in the humanities or social sciences. Students learn aspects of computer design and usage, including information systems, practical programming skills, computer networking, and the human–computer interface. It’s also a pathway for those looking to complete a Bachelor of Education or Graduate Diploma in Education in order to teach Information Processing and Technology in schools.

The BA can be taken as a dual degree with the majority of bachelor degree programs at UQ.

What will I study and what career opportunities will it lead to?

ICT permeates practically every career, and having some knowledge of it can give you an edge.  Employers are increasingly seeking high-performing, but well-rounded graduates.  Entry level jobs often suit generalists – people who have a wide range of skills and can perform in a range of roles.  Including an ICT major or some ICT courses in your Arts degree gives you an added advantage that many organisations value.  For example, many software products are sold in a wide variety of markets and combining languages with ICT is a very useful mix.  If you are considering a career as a teacher, ICT can be one of your teaching subjects.

When combined with the numerous other majors in the BA, the Information Technology major can lead to a career in:

• information systems
• human–computer interaction
• software
• psychology
• child development
• inter-group relations
• journalism
• communications
• education

Electives can include:  languages • software specifications • human computer interaction • artificial intelligence.
