The School has mechanisms for consulting students at each of its campuses. (Student grievances may also be dealt with in line with the policy viewable here.)
Students have access to a Student Consultative Committee, described below. The SCC commenced in 2004 and replaced the Student-Staff Liaison Committee forum meetings held twice each semester until the end of 2003.
Initially formed with undergraduate representatives, the SCC was expanded in 2005 to include postgraduate coursework and research higher degree student representatives, and again in 2008 to include Bachelor of Multimedia Design and Master of Interaction Design students (upon their relocation from the Ipswich campus to St Lucia).
ITEE Student Consultative Committee
The role of the committee is two-way communication:
-
the School consults and advises students on policy developments and changes affecting them;
-
students raise concerns and make suggestions about the operation of the School as it affects them.
Membership is:
President ITEE On Campus Alumni (OCA)
Head of School of ITEE
Director of Coursework Studies
Leaders of the Engineering and IT program families
School Manager
Infrastructure Manager
The student societies are requested to assist staff with the annual election/nomination of students from key compulsory courses in each year of the BE, BInfTech and BMultMedDes, and from a compulsory course in each of the ME, MIDes, MInfTech and MSc(CompSc) programs. [As a backup, the School may approach the staff coordinators of key compulsory courses representing the programs, to assist in finding a representative, or email students enrolled in these courses.] Each year, the School calls for nominations from its Research Higher Degree students to be representatives on various committees. One such representative shall be sought for the SCC.
Current student representatives and their constituencies are shown here.
Where the proportion of elected/nominated students who are international students falls short of the proportion in the School’s total population, the relevant UQ student societies directly representing international students (eg Singapore Students Society) will be approached to find additional members. [As a backup, the School may approach international students of its choosing or call more widely for nominations.]
Where the proportion of elected/nominated students who are female students falls short of the proportion in the School’s total population, the School’s representatives of Women in Information Technology Queensland and/or groups representing females studying Engineering will be approached to find additional members. [As a backup, the School may approach female students of its choosing or call more widely for nominations.]
Meetings take place at least twice each semester, typically in Weeks 3/4 and 10. Other meetings can be arranged as the need arises. Students provide the Chair of the Committee, who ensures the orderly conduct of the meetings, and a Student Secretary, who assists the Staff Secretary to assemble items for the meeting agendas and to check the drafts of minutes. There is a formal, minuted session where items are raised, results from previous enquiries are reported, information is exchanged. This can be followed by an informal session where a more free exchange can take place. Meetings typically occur over lunchtime, with food supplied by the School.
The student population is emailed ahead of each meeting so that individuals can raise issues with their representatives. Agendas and minutes of meetings are available here.
The Head of School and/or the Student Consultative Committee (by consensus) may decide that a general meeting of students of the School should be called.
